day 82, confluence of the Bull and Clark Fork Rivers, 51 miles

A quick 11 miles down the road found us at Kootenai Falls, where we took a short hike to check out one of the few falls on a major river in the NW not dammed up for hydropower. 4 mi later we turned to the south and followed along the Bull River drainage with the Cabinet mts. this time to the east. The whole ride was like flipping thru a rack of picture postcards!

We stopped midday at "Little Joe's" cafe in the middle of nowhere for lunch, no sign of Hoss and the rest of the Cartwrights. I think they were out filming the episode where Ben hires some questionable drifters to aerial spray the "Ponderosa" for pine bark beetle.

Upon reaching our picturesque campground, we stopped at a convenient store to refuel with - you guesssed it- chocolate milk, and met a nice young man originally from Worchester, MA who was on a mt. bike and pulling a trailer. His adventue had started in Edmonton and will finish in Bellingham, WA, doing a mix of dirt and paved roads. We shared our Adventure Cycling mapped routes with him (we are now on their "northern tier"), including the "long-cut" thru Colville that will eliminate one of the 4 passes through the North Cascades.

  1. Some of the rafting scenes from "The River Wild" were shot at Kootenai falls. Did you happen to see Kevin Bacon wandering around looking for his bag of bank loot?
