day 81, Libby , MT 48 miles (3629 total)

After a dissapointing breakfast at Happy's Inn (microwaveable burritos), we rode another 43 miles of no services into Libby. Just outside of town we caught our first glimpse of the impressive Cabinet Mountains and wilderness.

A good day for wildlife viewing: We spotted a whitetail doe and fawn, and just a few miles later a moose cow and calf crossed the road just in front of us!

Later this afternoon we'll stop at the the laundrymat to freshen up our clothes, then head to the Caboose Motel where we have reservations for the night. We're hoping they have complimentary conductor caps.

Attention Seattle Siblings:
We've calculated that we have at least 12 more days of riding to Seattle, so Stephanie's in the process of booking us flights home for the 31st of August, which should give us a few days to unwind with you all! This will also include the ride to the Pacific (by then we may settle for Lake Washington or some other body of water-as long as it connects to the Pacific) and the ceremonial dipping of the front wheel into it's waves! This may be followed by the ceremonial heaving of the bike off a cliff (depending on what it will cost us to ship it back home - can't take it on the plane!).

  1. If you venture to Lake Washington you might want to go a few miles further to Puget Sound so that you can dip that front tire into salty water. It's all bike trail along the canal so you don't need to worry about navigating any city streets. Looking forward to seeing you in a couple of weeks. Take care, Pete.

  3. Mike,
FYI, it cost us $455 to ship our cannondale tandem from Missoula to PA, including a custom box. By taking off everything we could, including the fork, it barely made the limit for UPS. By contrast, REI said they would ship a single bike for a total cost of $60, they wouldn't touch a tandem.
We're starting today for Lewiston, ID. Sorry I haven't called, but we've been in Pierce, ID, all week and no cell phone coverage.
