We bid adeiu to Derek after breakfast in Saratoga, he had decided to take a day off there and we had already made reservations at a campground in Rawlins for tonight. Not sure if we will connect with him again, by the end of the week he will be headed off route to meet a friend in Oregon. We will miss him.
A good wildlife viewing day: 2 male elk in velvet right in downtown Saratoga., 2 mule deer bucks near our campground, and too many pronghorn antelope to count for 46 miles! And let's not forget the prairie dog, prairie chicken, and rattlesnake roadkill (and the ocassional coyote).
We covered the first 21 miles in ludicrous speed thanks to a nnice tailwind, but as we turned west onto interstate 80 (yes, interstate as in exits and tandem tractor-trailers, but with wide, smooth shoulders) that wind became our foe in the form of a nasty crosswind. The rest of our ride took twice as long.
Upon reachinng Rawlins we headed to Murray's Bike Shop to pick up a few items. Soon a nasty T-storm was pounding the town with buckets of wind-driven rain and severe lightening. The owner was kind enough to let us sit it out on her couch., with lots of cycling magazines to pass the time. Howevwer, no sooner had we left to find our campground when another storm began, and as we looked for cover we discovered the town was without power, meaning all businesses were closed. The covered drive-thru at the bank served as a nice shelter and viewpoint to watch the storm rage across the vast landscape. In a half hour it was over and we went to Pizza Hut and warmed our chilled bodies with hot pizza and coffee.
We are now ready to doze off at the KOA, where Stephanie upgraded our tent site to one of their "Kozy Kabins". Goodnight!
PS- we plan to be in Yellowstone in a week, anybody care to join us for a day or two off?
