day 54, Fairplay, CO 46 miles

A steady headwind made for a very tiring day. The grades were gradual though as we continued our approach to Hoosier Pass. Tonight we our staying at a grand old inn in Fairplay, elevation 10,000', with our re-found friend Derick from Ireland! We were very surprised and pleased when he rolled into our bone yard campground in Guffey last night. We had him pegged for Wyoming by now but a troublesome knee had slowed his progress.

Snow-capped peaks filled the horizon to the north as we crested Currant Creek Pass early in today's ride. We also passed many cattle ranches, some with buildings beyond repair from a forgotten time.

I've been worried about our bike holding up, carrying the 2 of us and all of our gear 4000 plus miles. So tonight I performed a test to locate any cracks in the frame. Here are the step-by-step instructions in case you wish to do it on your own bike:

1. Begin by riding bike at sea level
2. Ride bike up to 10,000' above sea level
3. WEARING SAFETY GLASSES, carefully remove one of the water-bottle cage screws on the down-tube.
4. If screw pops out followed by hissing air, frame is good.

  1. Yikes, 10,000'. We've heard that eating bananas helps with elevation. Perhaps you can sneak some into your breakfast (if there is room on your plate next to the cinnamon rolls, eggs, bacon, etc... Not sure if it's true or an old wives tale. When all else fails, lots of ibuprofen. Pulling for you...
