Day 53, Guffey, CO, elevation 8660', 25 miles

Fantastic weather and views eased the hardship of climbing 3000' towards Hoosier Pass. The countryside is park-like, with more greenery than at the lower elevations we've been at, featuring pine and scrub oak.

Guffey is a tiny, quirky little town, where we will be spending the night camped in the "bone yard" (look for a picture later). It has a nice watering hole where we enjoyed a great BBQ pork sandwich and a Corona with lime (try finding that in Kansas!). To top it off we just added a Chai Tea and Latte at Rita's diner. All this in a town that features 90% of it's buildings shealthed with slab-wood siding! And if that's not enough, the mayor of the town is a cat named "Monster". We hope to enjoy an audience with him later.

Picked up a package from home at the post office: spare tire, gatorade powder, meds, etc. There we met a cyclist from the original "Bikecentennial" ride through here in 1976 (the birth of the TransAM route). She was so taken by the little town that she returned to live here after her coast to coast ride was over!

  3. Mike and Steph,
I'm enjoying catching up on your many adventures. Sounds like you're having a blast. Jen, me, and our daughters Leah and Lucy are at the cabin in Gatlinburg, celebrating Jean and Phil's 50th. The Kane clan is here. Maria and Mark and kids are due to arrive soon. The were delayed by a blown tire. We have a spectacular view of the Smokies here.

Please be sure to post a picture of Monster!

    All the best,

    Greg

  4. Mike and Stephanie,
we caught up with you in Pueblo, when you were on your rest day, but we took a 4 day break in Colorado Springs to celebrate the half way point. We start again on the 18th. We like seeing your names in all the logbooks as we trail along behind you.
