Day 12 - Damascus, Va. - 518 miles

Treated Brian and Allen to breakfast before heading out. We rode 47 miles thru the Mt. Rogers National Forest. It was a nice uphill grade with lots of downhills...awesome. We're staying at a hostel run by the local church, it's mostly used by Appalachian trail hikers. We got a package from home with extra supplies - Thanks Mel and Ken for the goodies! Dad was happy to see the local paper, great idea using it as packing.

  2. I wish your new friends Brian and Allen success on their trip. I checked out Allen's blog. I hope you keep meeting other riders on your trip as you go. Sent an email with weather info for the weekend. Sorry to hear about the headwinds. Can't remember giving you a forecast for that, except noticing that they've been westerly these days. But, you're in areas where I don't get weather observations, so I probably missed that.

I noticed that your list of where you stayed each night has disappeared from your blog? Did that part 'break'? (Usually to the right of the blog here).

Take care!!! Been fun mapping your progress.

  3. Having a good time reading the blog and charting your progress. I just noticed today that a big part of your route goes thru Kansas. I thought that I should warn you about....

The Top Tens Reasons not to bike Thru Kansas on a X-Country Trip:

    1. Least number of Elvis sightings in the lower 48.

    2. State bird is the flying monkey.

    3. Petrified Toto droppings every mile or so.

    4. A porous southern border which doesn't keep out Texans who barrel into Oklahoma to spy on
the Okies and end up tumbling right into Kansas.

    5. Civil unrest due to the lingering Lollipop Guild strike.

    6. Maryanne still hasn't returned from the Island.

    7. First 1/4 of Kansas is all in black and white.

    8. Incessant "OOO-EEE-OOO" chanting rides the wind.

    9. Wheat, wheat, wheat, wheat, bump, wheat, wheat, wheat, wheat, bump, ...

    10. TWISTER!!!

    Stay safe.
